Clérigo y literato inglés. Se educó en la Universidad de Oxford, donde en 1833 encabezó el movimiento de Oxford, que resaltaba los elementos católicos de la tradición religiosa inglesa y abogaba por la reforma de la Iglesia de Inglaterra. Newman fue admitido en la Iglesia Católica en 1845, pero su espíritu cuasi liberal le hizo blanco de las suspicacias de los pastores más rigurosos. El desafío planteado por Charles Kingsley le impulsó a escribir una elocuente exposición de su historia espiritual, la muy admirada Apologia pro vita sua (1864). Esa obra aseguró su posición en la iglesia, y en 1879 fue ordenado cardenal-diácono. También escribió obras teológicas, poesía religiosa y varios himnos, entre ellos Lead, Kindly Light [Guíanos una luz de bondad].
